Passable Japanese Food in splended Strip Mall Ambiance Reviewed by plafont on

In a town of limited choices, Asuka is a version of the Japanese experience that can be fun. It is depressingly wedged in near the Panera Bread and you have to chimp some parking from Borders (whose threatening signs warn against transgressions). Strip Mall aesthetic.
The food is standard - not outstanding and nothing to complain about. Grilled fish, rice, etc is good food and Asuka does not disappoint.
Service is attentive, the cooks are passable. I do not speak Japanese nor Chinese, but a passing experience with speakers in those languages makes me suspect at Asuka you get Japanese food cooked by Chinese expatriates. Not that it matters. I thought it funny.
It is pricey. If you go in off hours you have to sit up front (ie not at the grill) and that is really not good value for money. Be prepared to pay $70 for 3 people. I think that's top end for Bloomington.
Pros: Variety in a town with little variety, good service
Cons: Strip mall environment, pricey

I loved going to dinner here. Once we were seated, we got our food quickly and could easily get to a movie or anywhere else we needed to go. Downfall - Pepsi!
